Is it Australian politics, or Australian entertainment? This week, we watched Barnaby Joyce command a dog to “sit down” during a serious television interview, Anthony Albanese stumble on an escalator and drop an F-bomb, and political figures argue over flags, melons and parody videos.
There is nothing wrong with finding politics funny. These unscripted moments can provide welcome relief and show us something about the personalities behind the carefully prepared speeches. But why did they receive so much attention while Australians were struggling with housing costs, healthcare delays, rising energy bills and the cost of everyday essentials?
In this episode, we examine ten of the week’s strangest political distractions: from Pauline Hanson laughing about Barnaby’s dog and Bill Shorten praising Count Binface to arguments over the Union Jack, fossil-fuel terminology and who paid for Pauline Hanson’s European trip.
