Tom McIlroy is the political editor for Guardian Australia, based at Parliament House in Canberra. With over a decade of experience in the federal parliamentary press gallery, he spearheads the publication’s coverage of national politics, public policy, and federal elections. Before joining The Guardian, Tom built a distinguished reporting career writing for major outlets including the Australian Financial Review, The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, and The Canberra Times. His sharp commentary and analytical columns earned him widespread recognition, culminating in his appointment as political editor and winning the prestigious 2025 EU-Qantas Journalist Award.
Tom is also an accomplished author, having published Blue Poles: Jackson Pollock, Gough Whitlam and the Painting that Changed a Nation, which explores a landmark moment in Australian cultural history. A graduate of Melbourne University and RMIT University, he regularly breaks news on crucial issues ranging from national security threats to artificial intelligence regulations. Today, he lifts the curtain on how Canberra works, unpacks the latest political developments of the week, and answers anything you want to know about modern journalism.
