Welcome to this week’s edition of Australia Asks, and this week we are asking: “What the hell is going on in Albania, and what can we in Australia do about it?” Today, we’re talking about a story unfolding on the other side of the world that has implications far beyond the borders of Albania. Protests over a controversial luxury development project have captured international attention, with many Albanians arguing that this isn’t just about tourism or investment, but about transparency, national identity, environmental protection and who gets a say in the future of their country.
What makes this story even more remarkable is the unexpected Australian connection. People here in Australia, including some of us who were involved in the successful campaign against the proposed Trump Tower on the Gold Coast, have begun standing in solidarity with Albanian protesters. So why are Australians getting involved in a fight thousands of kilometres away? That’s exactly what we’ll explore today.
