Clip 02. Could publicly owned supermarkets deliver cheaper groceries in Victoria? In this interview clip, Ellen explains a proposal to trial ten public supermarkets, five in metropolitan Melbourne and five in regional Victoria, and introduce price caps on essential grocery items.
Responding to an audience question about whether a New York-inspired model could work across a much larger state, Ellen outlines the case for starting with a Victorian trial. She discusses international comparisons, including US military grocery stores, and refers to Green Institute research on public ownership and supermarket profit margins.
The conversation also explores a proposal to give Victoria’s Essential Services Commission greater powers to cap prices on a basket of essential food items, with the aim of tackling supermarket price gouging and easing cost-of-living pressures.
Would you shop at a publicly owned supermarket? Could public ownership and grocery price caps help bring down your weekly shopping bill? Share your thoughts in the comments.
