Australian politics has delivered another week in which the headlines seem determined to outdo satire. A Senate inquiry heard extraordinary allegations about gambling companies supplying high rollers with drugs, escorts and luxury travel; a federal MP was charged following an alleged clash with the King’s representative; and Liberal factional warfare was compared to Braveheart. Meanwhile, a record-breaking sprint became a racial controversy, selected journalists were locked out of a One Nation candidate launch, and senior Liberals offered almost every possible answer about a hypothetical alliance with Pauline Hanson’s party.
The political soap opera continued with questions about Barnaby Joyce’s future in One Nation, two contrasting legal outcomes involving Hanson, and Victoria’s new premier Ben Carroll acquiring the nickname “Kmart Keating”. Even artificial intelligence joined the political chaos, as Canberra, Queensland and the Northern Territory argued over whether power-hungry data centres could place extra pressure on household electricity bills. This episode examines ten of the week’s strangest Australian political stories, separating the important facts from the spectacle while finding some humour in a political landscape that increasingly resembles a comedy writers’ room.
