Welcome to this week’s edition of Australia Asks, where the headlines are factual, the consequences are serious, and the political behaviour occasionally resembles a television comedy written by people who thought subtlety was overrated. From missing financial statements and a $312,000 branding contract to diplomatic insults, billionaire-funded travel and a telecommunications outage blamed (without evidence) on China, it has been another remarkably strange week in Australian politics.
We will also examine a challenger taking on the Prime Minister in his own electorate, Victoria’s leadership chaos, the battle over Brisbane’s proposed Olympic stadium, questions surrounding an exclusive Point Piper fundraiser and the latest chapter in the Moira Deeming saga. Beneath the jokes are important questions about accountability, public spending, political access, national security and democratic leadership, so let us separate the facts from the spin and ask our political leaders the question they hear far too rarely: please explain.
