David Heilpern is an Australian legal trailblazer, author, and former NSW Magistrate who served on the bench for over two decades before retiring in 2020. Throughout his distinguished judicial career, he presided over thousands of cases in regional and metropolitan courts, earning a reputation for his compassionate approach and commitment to social justice.
Before his appointment to the judiciary, Heilpern was a passionate criminal defence lawyer, a university law lecturer, and a vocal advocate for drug law reform. His landmark rulings and public stances, particularly his critique of Australia’s drug driving laws, have made him a highly respected and recognisable figure in the nation’s legal landscape.
He is the author of several influential books, including Fear or Favour: Inside the Courts of the Northern Rivers, which offers an unfiltered look into the realities of the Australian justice system.
In this Reddit AMA, David is excited to connect directly with the community to answer your burning questions about the realities of life as a magistrate, the urgent need for drug policy reform, the future of community legal education, and what it takes to change the system from within.
