Professor Rod Sims AO is an Australian economist, public-policy expert and former Chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. He led the ACCC from 2011 until 2022, becoming the longest-serving chair in the regulator’s history. During his tenure, he became a prominent advocate for stronger competition, consumer protection and greater accountability from powerful companies, with a particular focus on digital platforms, energy markets, infrastructure, telecommunications and misleading corporate conduct. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2022 for distinguished service to public administration through economic-policy and regulatory roles.
Rod is now Chair of the Superpower Institute and a professor at the Australian National University’s Crawford School of Public Policy, where his work focuses on competition, economic policy and Australia’s potential to become a renewable-energy superpower. His earlier career included senior positions in government and business, including serving as an economic adviser to Prime Minister Bob Hawke and as a deputy secretary in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
