Dr Monique Ryan MP is the Independent Federal Member for Kooyong in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. First elected in May 2022, she became the first woman and the first independent to represent the electorate. Before entering Parliament, she was a paediatric neurologist, medical researcher and Director of Neurology at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital, where she led a clinical department and research into childhood nerve and muscle disorders. Having lived in Kooyong for most of her life, she brings longstanding community connections and a background in medicine and science to her parliamentary work.
In Parliament, Dr Ryan’s priorities include climate action and clean energy, political integrity, housing affordability, cost-of-living pressures, and better health and disability services. She describes her approach as guided by evidence and consultation with her constituents, with an emphasis on transparency and accountability. For this Reddit AMA, she joins the community to discuss her transition from medicine to politics, the work of an independent MP, and the issues shaping Australia’s future. Participants can ask about her policy priorities, experiences in Canberra, or what it takes to represent a community outside the major parties.
