Tom Tate is the 13th Mayor of the City of Gold Coast and the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history. First elected in 2012, he secured a fourth term in 2024 after more than a decade overseeing one of Australia’s fastest-growing cities. A qualified civil engineer and experienced businessman, Tom worked in construction, property, tourism and hospitality before entering public life. Born in Laos to a Thai mother and an Australian father, he later moved to Australia, graduated from the University of New South Wales and eventually made the Gold Coast his home.
During his time as mayor, Tom has focused on major infrastructure, transport, tourism, economic development and preparations for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. His mayoralty has included the Gold Coast’s hosting of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, continued expansion of the light-rail network and efforts to protect the city’s natural environment while accommodating rapid population growth. Known for his energetic and outspoken public style, Tom joins this Reddit AMA to answer questions about local government, the future of the Gold Coast and the opportunities and challenges facing the city.
