  • 2014 – Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 was shot down by Russian-controlled forces over Ukraine killing all 298 on board, including 27 Australians.

Vodafone chose 4 people from 500 applicants and paid their salaries for a year to work for their chosen charity. Mine was Big Issue magazine, helping the homeless. Sydney, Australia.

  • 1800 – Reverends Richard Johnson and Samuel Marsden open a church school at Ryde.
  • 1914 – Maurice Guillaux (pictured) leaves Melbourne to fly to Sydney in a Blériot monoplane in the first delivery of airmail. He arrived in Sydney on 18 July after nine and a half hours of flying time.
  • 1962 – Public funding of private schools becomes an issue following a strike by parents and the community who closed Catholic schools in Goulburn, New South Wales.
  • 1986 – An explosion at Moura No. 4 mine in Moura, Queensland kills 12 people.

  • 1912 – The first branch of the Commonwealth Bank opens.
  • 1940 – The Volunteer Defence Force, composed mainly of World War I veterans, was formed for home defence by the Returned Services League.
  • 1977 – Anti-drugs campaigner Donald Mackay disappears near Griffith, presumed murdered.
  • 1995 – The Queensland state election produces a hung Parliament, but with the support of Gladstone-based independent Liz Cunningham the coalition form the government in Queensland.

  • 1997 – A crowd of over 100,000 people watch the Royal Canberra Hospital implosion. Twelve-year-old Katie Bender is killed instantly when debris from the site travels across Lake Burley Griffin.
