Improving Disability Services in Bonner

.

Craig Hill, the Legalise Cannabis Party candidate in Bonner, Queensland, has released a plan for improving disability services in the electorate.

This is something that is close to the heart for Craig, a disabled person himself. He lives with autism and PTSD, but has overcome them to be gainfully employed, obtain graduate and post graduate qualifications, own his own house and participate actively in the community.

Craig recognises that he only achieved this with assistance from his support group and now advocates for similar successes for others with disability. “I believe that those who overcome disability have both a responsibility and a duty to assist those who are yet to do so,” Craig said.

Addressing disability services in the federal electorate of Bonner involves leveraging a combination of local organisations, state initiatives, and federal programs to support individuals with disabilities.

Local Organisations and Services:

  • Help Disability Care operates a hub in Wynnum West, providing a comprehensive range of support services aimed at enhancing the well-being and potential of individuals with disabilities.
    .
  • CODA Disability Support Association Inc offers personalised support, including plan management, in-home assistance, and respite services through their Rochedale Retreat.
    .
  • Wesley Mission Queensland delivers diverse services such as home and community support, specialist disability accommodation, employment assistance, and allied health services across South East Queensland.
    .
  • UnitingCare provides disability support services, including independent living assistance, early childhood support, holiday programs, and employment services.

State Initiatives:

The Queensland Government’s Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services, and Child Safety offers various programs, including the Queensland Disability Plan 2022-27, NDIS access support, and accommodation and respite services.

Advocacy and Support Networks:

  • Queenslanders With Disability Network (QDN) focuses on connecting individuals with disabilities through peer support groups and community initiatives.
    .
  • ADA Australia provides advocacy support for individuals with disabilities, ensuring they receive appropriate services and assistance.

Voting Accessibility:

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is committed to making voting accessible for individuals with disabilities. They offer resources such as Easy Read guides, social stories, and telephone voting options for those who are blind or have low vision.

Community Engagement:

Engaging with local councils and representatives is crucial. Brisbane City Council, encompassing parts of Bonner, has 26 wards with dedicated councillors who can address local disability service concerns.

By collaborating with these organisations and utilising available resources, the community in Bonner can work towards enhancing and addressing disability services effectively.
