Addressing Transport Infrastructure Challenges in Bonner

.

The federal electorate of Bonner, encompassing suburbs such as Wynnum, Manly, Carindale, and Mount Gravatt, is currently grappling with significant transport infrastructure challenges across road, rail, and bus networks. These issues are impacting daily commutes, economic productivity, and the overall quality of life for residents.

Road Infrastructure Concerns

Bonner’s roadways are experiencing escalating congestion, particularly along major arterials like the Gateway Motorway, Wynnum Road and Old Cleveland Road. These bottlenecks not only extend travel times but also raise safety concerns.

While the Australian Government has committed an additional $7.2 billion to upgrade and fix the Bruce Highway, aiming to bring it up to a minimum three-star safety rating, it’s imperative that similar attention and funding be directed towards the critical roadways within Bonner to alleviate local traffic pressures.

Rail Network Limitations

The absence of a dedicated passenger rail line servicing key areas within Bonner limits residents’ access to efficient and reliable public transport options. This gap places additional strain on road networks and contributes to increased vehicular congestion.

The Western Brisbane Transport Network Strategy has previously highlighted the need for transforming Brisbane’s suburban rail services to a “turn-up-and-go” system with new multi-purpose stations. Implementing such strategies in Bonner could significantly enhance public transport accessibility and efficiency.

Bus Service Challenges

Bus services in Bonner face issues of frequency and coverage, especially in suburban areas. The Climate Council reports that approximately 66% of Greater Brisbane residents lack access to frequent, all-day public transport services.

This shortfall discourages public transport use and increases reliance on private vehicles. Additionally, initiatives like the 50-cent fares trial have raised concerns about potential system overloads without corresponding increases in service capacity.

Proposed Solutions

To address these pressing issues, a multifaceted approach is essential:

  1. Road Upgrades: Allocate targeted funding for the enhancement of key arterial roads within Bonner, focusing on expanding capacity, improving safety features, and reducing congestion points.
    .
  2. Rail Infrastructure Development: Conduct feasibility studies for extending the passenger rail network into Bonner, aligning with strategies to create a high-frequency, reliable rail service that meets the needs of the growing population.
    .
  3. Bus Service Improvements: Increase the frequency and coverage of bus services, ensuring that all residents have access to reliable public transport within 800 meters of their homes, with services running at least every 15 minutes during peak hours.
    .
  4. Integrated Transport Planning: Foster collaboration between federal, state, and local governments to develop a cohesive transport plan that addresses current deficiencies and anticipates future growth, ensuring sustainable and efficient transport solutions for Bonner.

Addressing the transport infrastructure challenges in Bonner requires coordinated efforts and substantial investment. By implementing these solutions, we can enhance connectivity, reduce congestion, and improve the quality of life for all residents in the electorate.
