Affordable Housing Crisis in Bonner Demands Urgent Federal Action

.

Residents across the federal electorate of Bonner are calling for urgent action to address the deepening housing affordability crisis that is putting increasing pressure on families, young people, essential workers, and older Australians.

As house prices and rents continue to soar across Brisbane’s bayside suburbs, many locals are finding it harder than ever to secure stable, affordable housing close to where they work, study, and raise families.

In suburbs such as Carindale, Wynnum, and Mount Gravatt, the dream of home ownership is slipping out of reach for many, while rental stress is becoming the norm rather than the exception.

Too many people in Bonner are being priced out of their own community. Teachers, nurses, retail workers, and retirees are being forced to live further away or endure housing insecurity. This is not sustainable, and it’s not fair.”

Craig Hill, the Legalise Cannabis Party candidate in Bonner,  calling on the Federal Government to take a leadership role by implementing a comprehensive plan to increase the supply of affordable and social housing in Bonner. This includes:

  • Increased Federal Investment: Direct funding for new social and affordable housing projects through the Housing Australia Future Fund and partnerships with community housing providers.
    .
  • Support for Build-to-Rent Projects: Incentives to encourage the construction of long-term rental housing developments with rent caps and tenant protections.
    .
  • Inclusionary Zoning: Federal cooperation with state and local governments to ensure a percentage of new developments include affordable housing options.
    .
  • Stronger Rent Protections: National leadership on rental reform to give tenants greater stability and reduce the risk of homelessness.
    .
  • Unlocking Underutilised Land: Federal-owned land in Bonner should be assessed and, where appropriate, made available for affordable housing projects.

The electorate of Bonner, stretching from the southern Brisbane suburbs to Moreton Bay, represents a diverse and growing community. With demand for housing outstripping supply, the risk is that the area becomes unaffordable for the very people who keep the community running.

Affordable housing isn’t just a social issue – it’s an economic and community stability issue. We need leadership that puts people first and delivers real solutions for the families of Bonner.”

The community is encouraged to speak up and demand that affordable housing becomes a top priority in the lead-up to the next Federal Budget.

We can do this by voting for Craig Hill, the Legalise Cannabis Party candidate in Bonner.

  1. I was genuinely surprised to see how many of the issues we face here in Lisbon are also being experienced in Australia. A really insightful read!
