Tips for Preparing for a Cyclone

.

Preparing your house for a cyclone is crucial to minimise damage and ensure safety. Here are some suggestions:

Before Cyclone Season

  1. Check Your Insurance – Ensure your home and contents insurance covers cyclone damage.
  2. Inspect the Roof & Gutters – Secure loose tiles, fix leaks, and clean gutters and downpipes.
  3. Trim Trees & Remove Loose Items – Cut weak branches and clear debris that could become projectiles.
  4. Secure Outdoor Structures – Reinforce carports, sheds, fences, and any loose fixtures.
  5. Stock Emergency Supplies – Have a kit with a torch, batteries, first aid supplies, food, water, and important documents.

When a Cyclone Warning is Issued

  1. Secure Windows & Doors – Use cyclone shutters or tape glass windows to reduce shattering risk.
  2. Bring Loose Items Inside – Move outdoor furniture, bins, and garden tools indoors or secure them.
  3. Park Vehicles Safely – Undercover, away from trees and potential hazards.
  4. Turn Off Utilities If Necessary – Know how to shut off gas, water, and electricity if instructed.
  5. Prepare an Evacuation Plan – Know your local emergency shelter and have a plan for pets.

During the Cyclone

  1. Stay Indoors & Away from Windows – Stay in the strongest part of the house (e.g., a small central room).
  2. Monitor Emergency Updates – Use a battery-powered radio for updates.
  3. Do Not Go Outside – Even if it seems calm, the eye of the cyclone could be passing.

After the Cyclone

  1. Wait for Official Clearance – Do not go outside until authorities say it’s safe.
  2. Check for Damage & Hazards – Be cautious of fallen power lines, flooding, and unstable structures.
  3. Avoid Floodwaters – They may be contaminated or hide hazards.
  4. Contact Authorities for Assistance – Report hazards and seek help if needed.

If you require assistance, contact the State Emergency Service in your state.
