  • 1915 – The Battle of Lone Pine (pictured) begins on Gallipoli, seven Australians are awarded the Victoria Crosses for this battle (read the full story here).
  • 1919 – Harry Butler made the first air flight over a major body of water in Australia.
  • 1951 – Entertainer Daryl Somers is born.
