• 1950 – Australia announces that it will send troops to the Korean War.
• 2003 – Australian artist and eight-time Archibald Prize winner Sir William Dargie dies.

• Independence Day (Liberia), celebrates the independence of Liberia from the American Colonization Society in 1847.
