- 1795 – George Gawler, second Governor of South Australia, is born in Southsea.
- 1961 – Morris Iemma, Premier of New South Wales, is born.
- 1991 – Greek tanker Kirki (pictured) spills 17,280 tons of crude oil off the coast of Western Australia, the biggest oil spill in Australian waters.
