Here are some of the events that happened on this day in Australian history. Please feel free to add others that you know of in the comments section.

  • 1791 – Allan Cunningham, botanist and explorer, best known for discovering the Darling Downs is born in Wimbledon, London.
  • 1945 – Ben Chifley (pictured) becomes sixteenth Prime Minister of Australia.
  • 1961 – Australian rules footballer, Tim Watson is born.
  • 1997 – A crowd of over 100,000 people watch the Royal Canberra Hospital implosion. Twelve-year-old Katie Bender is killed instantly when debris from the site travels across Lake Burley Griffin.

International Observances.

  • Feast of Kalimát, first day of the seventh month of the Baháʼí calendar. (Baháʼí Faith)
  • Statehood Day (Montenegro)
  • The last day of Naadam (Mongolia)
  • Kashmir Martyrs’ Day (Pakistan)
