China News

Hong Kong’s Phoenix Satellite TV reported yesterday evening: a Russian website on China’s PLA carries a photograph from a Chinese website of the electromagnetic catapult developed by China on its own. The equipment is 100 meter long and can accelerate an aircraft to takeoff speed in 45 seconds.

According to experts, the catapult is one of the most sophisticated parts on a modern aircraft carrier.

Due to the catapult’s great need for power, a carrier must be nuclear powered if it is installed with such a catapult while according to U.S. sources, China is building nuclear aircraft carriers in Shanghai and Wuhan and the carriers are expected to be completed by 2010.

The website says that people taking part in developing the catapult have been commended by China’s Central Military Commissions.
