In an age of soundbites and staged interviews, a new wave of public engagement is taking shape online through Reddit’s AMAs, or “Ask Me Anything” sessions. Now gaining momentum in Australia, these interactive Q&As are connecting everyday Australians with politicians, journalists, scientists, and cultural figures like never before.
Hosted on the popular r/Australian subreddit, the AMAs give users a unique chance to ask public figures unfiltered questions in a live forum. From federal MPs and senators to renowned journalists and community advocates, the line-up has been as diverse as the questions they field.
Unlike traditional interviews, Reddit AMAs are informal, open to all, and driven by the community. Users vote for the best questions, and the guests answer directly – no spin, no filter. For politicians, it’s an opportunity to speak directly to constituents; for the public, it’s a rare chance to challenge decision-makers and media figures on the issues that matter most.
“The AMAs are a breath of fresh air,” says one Reddit moderator. “People ask what they really want to know, not just what makes the evening news.”
Past guests include Dr Andrew Leigh, Patrick Gorman, Simon Birmingham, Adam Bandt, David Pocock, Malcolm Roberts, Amy Remeikis, Peter van Onselen and even Santa Claus.
Upcoming guests include high-profile parliamentarians, investigative reporters, and advocates from across the country. Whether you’re passionate about policy, media, science, or simply curious about someone’s path, there’s something for everyone.
